Recently I’ve become aware of a problem among authors in romance world. I’m not sure if every genre has this problem, but lately I’ve seen more and more posting about authors stealing each others work.
This stealing is blatant too. Most books are copied word for word, with name changes and maybe a few adjectives changed, but these works are literally the same, even down to the blurb.
When I was in college, plagiarism was a huge “no-no.” You would be expelled from the school if you were caught doing it. I don’t understand where people lost the message about stealing another person’s work. Maybe it’s because there is so much “sharing” on the internet, that it just seemed liked it was OK to do. I don’t know, but it’s something we need to stop now.
All I can say is please be mindful of all your hard work, sweat and tears. You don’t want someone else profiting from your writing because they were too lazy to do it themselves. You don’t want your intellectual property to be stolen right out from under your nose.
Until next time, be original.
